Liton Named ODI Captain Too as BCB Moves Miraz Out in Major Leadership Shake-Up অথবা BCB Hands Liton ODI Captaincy as Miraz Loses Leadership Role in Reshuffle

Putting an end to days of speculation, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced a major reshuffle in the national team’s leadership structure. At Wednesday’s board meeting, Litton Kumar Das was officially appointed the new ODI captain, replacing Mehidy Hasan Miraz. With this decision, Litton will now lead Bangladesh in both white-ball formats, while Towhid Hridoy has been named vice-captain for both ODIs and T20Is.

There has been no change in the Test setup. Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue as captain of the red-ball side, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz remaining the vice-captain. The appointments were confirmed by BCB president Tamim Iqbal during a press conference after the board meeting.

Explaining the change, Tamim said the board has adopted a long-term leadership strategy that favors two captains instead of three separate captains for the three formats. According to him, one captain for white-ball cricket and another for red-ball cricket is a more effective and stable model.

“We had three captains across the three formats. I believe we should have two captains—one for white-ball cricket and one for red-ball cricket. Litton Das will lead the white-ball teams, while Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue as the red-ball captain,” Tamim said.

He also confirmed that Towhid Hridoy has been appointed vice-captain of the white-ball teams, while the Test vice-captaincy remains unchanged with Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

Although Miraz has lost the ODI captaincy, Tamim praised his leadership and acknowledged his success in the role. He emphasized that the team now needs Miraz to make a bigger impact as an all-rounder, particularly with the ball.

“Miraz has been a very successful captain, winning four of the last five series. But we need him more as a cricketer. He has done well with the bat, though there is still room for improvement in his bowling,” Tamim added.

It is worth noting that Mehidy Hasan Miraz was appointed Bangladesh’s ODI captain in 2024, replacing Najmul Hossain Shanto. During his tenure, he led the team in 24 ODIs, winning 10 matches, losing 13, while one match ended without a result.

With Wednesday’s decision, Miraz’s chapter as ODI captain comes to an end, and Litton Kumar Das begins a new era as Bangladesh’s leader in both white-ball formats.
