Three Costly Mistakes Send England to Defeat as Spain Win Thriller at Wembley

England let a 2–1 lead slip at Wembley as world champions Spain came from behind to secure a dramatic 3–2 victory. The result gave Spain another win over England following their Euro 2024 final triumph.

Spain struck after just two minutes when Marc Guehi failed to spot Lamine Yamal lurking behind him. The Barcelona winger capitalised on the defensive mistake to put the visitors ahead.

England quickly recovered, while Spain missed two clear chances through Ferran Torres in the first half. James Trafford denied Torres with his first attempt before the forward fired his second opportunity wide.

England then turned the game around with two goals in four minutes. Anthony Gordon equalised in the 36th minute after receiving a pass from Jude Bellingham, before Harry Kane put England ahead four minutes later.

Kane's diving header from Neco O'Reilly's chipped delivery went in off Marc Cucurella's thigh, with the England captain awarded the goal.

England had a major chance to extend their lead shortly after the break. Rodri brought down Bellingham inside the box and, following a VAR review, England were awarded a penalty.

However, Kane struck the crossbar from the spot in the 55th minute. Replays showed that his left foot appeared to slip slightly as he took the penalty.

Spain levelled just a minute later. A misplaced pass from Neco O'Reilly allowed Spain to launch another attack, with Baena finishing to make it 2–2.

The comeback was completed in the 74th minute when Mikel Oyarzabal combined with Baena before finding the net. Oyarzabal had also scored Spain's winning goal against England in the Euro 2024 final.

England's defeat ultimately came down to three costly moments: Guehi's early mistake, O'Reilly's misplaced pass and Kane's missed penalty.

The victory was especially significant for Spain as it was their first match since becoming world champions. Luis de la Fuente's side also extended their unbeaten run to 39 matches.
