IPL-PSL Schedule Clash Set to Continue in 2027
The scheduling clash between the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL) shows no sign of ending. The two major franchise T20 leagues are set to overlap again in 2027, marking the third consecutive year in which the tournaments are expected to compete for space on the cricket calendar.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that the 12th edition of the PSL will begin on March 18, 2027, with the final scheduled for May 2. The tournament will feature eight teams.
The schedule was finalized following discussions with franchise owners and representatives at a PSL governing council meeting held in London last month.
There had previously been discussions about moving the PSL to January-February. The proposal was primarily aimed at avoiding a direct clash with the IPL while also creating opportunities to increase broadcasting and advertising revenue.
However, Pakistan’s winter conditions, fog and the timing of Ramadan presented several practical challenges. As a result, the March-May window was ultimately retained for the 2027 season.
The official schedule for the 20th edition of the IPL has not yet been finalized. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has identified March 10 to May 15, 2027, as a possible window, partly to reduce the risks associated with extreme heat and the monsoon season.
If that window is adopted, a significant portion of the IPL could overlap with the PSL, which is scheduled to run from March 18 to May 2.
The two leagues also overlapped in 2025 and 2026, creating additional competition for overseas players. With the IPL offering a much larger commercial market and greater financial strength, the PSL has faced a tougher challenge in attracting and retaining international stars during the overlapping period.
Despite the challenges, the PCB remains optimistic about the PSL. Following the expansion to eight teams and record attendance in the previous edition, the board is expecting an even bigger tournament in 2027.
The IPL-PSL scheduling clash is therefore becoming more than a calendar issue. It could once again intensify competition between the two leagues for overseas players, viewers, broadcasters and commercial opportunities.
