Celebrations for football’s most prestigious individual award can sometimes begin before the winner is officially announced. Private jets, guest lists and specially prepared outfits may all be part of the plan—but one announcement can change everything. Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior experienced that disappointment in 2024. Now, Barcelona’s young star Lamine Yamal is reportedly at the centre of a similar story ahead of the Ballon d’Or ceremony.

According to reports citing journalist Victor Navarro of Spanish radio station Cadena COPE, Yamal is expected to travel to London for Monday’s Ballon d’Or ceremony on a private jet, accompanied by people close to him. Barcelona’s official delegation will reportedly travel separately on another private aircraft.

Reports also suggest that plans are already in place for celebrations should Yamal win the award. The news has drawn comparisons with Vinicius, whose confidence ahead of the 2024 ceremony was matched by elaborate preparations.

Vinicius Prepared for a Win, but Rodri Took the Award

Before the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony, Vinicius was widely considered a leading contender after playing a key role in Real Madrid’s Champions League triumph. Reports at the time described preparations for a celebration involving around 20 invited guests.

Those plans reportedly included a private jet, specially designed clothing, hotel bookings and promises of Rolex watches for teammates. Nike, one of Vinicius’ major sponsors, was also reported to have prepared a special promotional campaign and custom football boots for the Brazilian forward.

However, the award ultimately went to Spain midfielder Rodri. After reports emerged that Vinicius would not win, Real Madrid decided to boycott the ceremony. The decision sparked widespread debate across international media.

Could Yamal Face a Similar Twist?

Nearly two years later, Yamal has become the subject of similar speculation ahead of the Ballon d’Or ceremony. If the reports about his preparations are accurate, they underline the enormous expectations surrounding football’s biggest individual awards.

But confidence and elaborate plans do not guarantee victory. Until the winner is officially announced, the outcome remains uncertain. Whether Yamal will leave London with the famous golden ball will only become clear when the final result is revealed.

Vinicius’ experience offers a timely reminder: dreaming big is part of football, but the safest time to celebrate an individual award is after the trophy is in your hands.
