Mbappe Brace Ends Barcelona's Perfect Start as Real Madrid Win El Clasico
Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid
Kylian Mbappe struck twice as Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou to win the first El Clasico of the season. The victory ended Barcelona's perfect start to the La Liga campaign after nine consecutive wins and reduced the gap between the two rivals to three points.
Real Madrid were forced to make a late change in goal after Thibaut Courtois was ruled out with flu. Andriy Lunin stepped in and produced an outstanding performance.
The Ukrainian goalkeeper made several important saves, including a crucial stop from Gerard Martin's second-half header. He also denied Anthony Gordon during Barcelona's bright opening spell.
Barcelona started the match strongly. Raphinha and Lamine Yamal both had early opportunities, while Lunin was forced into action to keep out Gordon.
Despite controlling much of the early possession and creating more chances, Barcelona could not find the breakthrough.
Mbappe Gives Real Madrid the Lead
Real Madrid opened the scoring in the 41st minute.
Yan Diomande delivered a dangerous cross from the right, and Gerard Martin attempted to clear the ball. His clearance instead deflected off Mbappe and ended up in the Barcelona net.
The goal was somewhat fortunate, but Real Madrid had defended well and remained dangerous on the counterattack. Diomande nearly doubled the lead just before half-time but his effort went narrowly wide.
Barcelona had a major chance to equalise shortly after conceding, but Lamine Yamal failed to find the target after getting through on goal.
Raphinha Brings Barcelona Level
Barcelona returned for the second half with greater intensity.
Their pressure finally paid off in the 61st minute.
A quickly taken corner allowed Pedri to set up Raphinha, who fired a low left-footed shot into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.
The equaliser transformed the atmosphere inside Camp Nou. Barcelona pushed forward in search of a second goal and appeared to have the momentum.
Gerard Martin came close again, but Lunin produced another excellent save to deny his header.
Mbappe Delivers the Winning Blow
Just when Barcelona were pushing for the winner, Real Madrid struck on the counterattack.
In the 87th minute, Jude Bellingham helped launch the move before Arda Guler and Eduardo Camavinga combined to create the decisive opportunity.
Camavinga burst forward and squared the ball across the box for Mbappe, who calmly finished into an unguarded net.
The Frenchman made no mistake, scoring his second goal of the night and giving Real Madrid a 2-1 lead.
The goal was particularly significant for Mbappe because it was his 100th goal for Real Madrid, reached in his 116th appearance for the club.
Barcelona's Winning Run Comes to an End
Mbappe's brace made him the decisive figure in another memorable El Clasico.
Raphinha had brought Barcelona back into the game, but Real Madrid ultimately proved more clinical in front of goal.
Barcelona had entered the match with nine wins from nine league games and were aiming to make it 10 consecutive victories. Instead, their perfect start came to an end at Camp Nou.
The Title Race Tightens
Despite the defeat, Barcelona remain top of La Liga with 27 points after 10 matches.
Real Madrid moved to 24 points, while Atletico Madrid sit second on 25 points. The result therefore reduced Barcelona's advantage over Real Madrid to just three points.
It was Barcelona's second consecutive defeat in all competitions after their 4-2 Champions League loss away to Paris Saint-Germain.
For Real Madrid, meanwhile, the victory gave Jose Mourinho a winning return to El Clasico as the club's manager after 13 years.
Most importantly, Mbappe's two goals ended Barcelona's perfect league start and gave Real Madrid a major victory at Camp Nou.
