Neymar plans to do nothing for a year after retirement; why does the Brazilian star even find watching football tiresome?

Neymar began his professional football career at the age of 17. Seventeen years have passed since then, and he is now 34. Having spent a significant portion of his life on the pitch, the Brazilian star is now contemplating his life after football. The Santos forward intends to stay completely away from the sport for at least a year following his retirement, choosing to spend that time exactly as he pleases.

While Neymar is thrilled with his recent strong performances for Santos, he is already planning for his life beyond the pitch. In an interview with the channel 'Varanda Gourmet', the Brazilian star shared his thoughts regarding his post-retirement plans.

Neymar said, "Certainly, after I retire, I plan to spend a year doing absolutely nothing. It will be like this—if I feel like playing football on a given day, I’ll play. If I don’t feel like doing anything at all, then I won’t do anything."

He loves football, but finds watching it on TV tedious.

Despite his deep love for the sport, Neymar does not particularly enjoy watching live matches on television; in fact, he finds the experience rather tiresome. He does, however, occasionally enjoy watching basketball.

Explaining this habit, Neymar remarked, "I don’t like watching football on TV. I do enjoy basketball, though—occasionally. Whenever I sit down to watch football, I end up getting annoyed."

The Brazilian star also explained why this is the case. According to him, loving football does not necessarily mean one must spend long hours watching matches on television; his passion lies primarily in being on the pitch and playing the game himself.

Neymar added, "When I mention this in interviews or while talking to friends, no one believes me. I love football, but I love *playing* it. Simply sitting on a sofa and watching a match on TV just isn't enough for me."

He used to find it tedious when his teammates at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) would watch football.

Neymar also touched upon his experiences from his time playing for Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). When his teammates were around, they would spend a large part of the weekend watching football on television. However, Neymar found no enjoyment in this at all.

In his own words, "When my teammates were with me in Paris or Barcelona, every Saturday and Sunday, there was nothing but football on TV. It used to annoy me so much that I wouldn't even stay in the living room. Watching football from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM—I just can't stand that."

Despite his reluctance to watch live matches on television, Neymar is not entirely detached from the sport. He enjoys watching documentaries and various other types of video content related to football.

Neymar remains active on the pitch

Although he once planned to take a year-long break after retiring, the time for Neymar to step away from football has not yet arrived. The star, who wears the number 10 jersey for Santos, is focused on maintaining his performance on the field.

He is set to play for Santos against Bahia this coming Saturday. For now, his focus remains entirely on the game. Whether he will eventually follow through on his plan to take a year-long break after retirement—only time will tell.
