Tebas Accuses Real Madrid of Trying to Damage Spanish Football
The long-running dispute between Real Madrid and La Liga has escalated again, with La Liga president Javier Tebas launching a fresh criticism of the Spanish giants. Tebas has accused Real Madrid and its official television channel, Real Madrid TV, of selectively presenting information about referees and creating distrust within Spanish football.
In a lengthy post on X, Tebas criticised Real Madrid TV’s coverage of refereeing decisions and incidents involving officials appointed for the club’s upcoming matches. He alleged that the channel repeatedly highlights selected incidents in a way that fuels suspicion towards the refereeing system.
Tebas compared the alleged communication strategy to propaganda techniques used by Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Germany’s propaganda minister during World War II. He later clarified that his comparison was about the alleged propaganda method rather than Nazi ideology.
According to Tebas, Real Madrid’s leadership and its television channel repeatedly select incidents that suit their interests, express grievances and create suspicion. He argues that such a strategy can undermine trust in refereeing and Spanish football institutions.
Tebas Questions Real Madrid’s Position on the Negreira Case
Tebas also questioned Real Madrid’s role in the case involving former refereeing official José María Enríquez Negreira and Barcelona.
Referring to previous comments by Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, Tebas questioned why the club’s position towards Barcelona appeared to change after relations between the two clubs deteriorated and Barcelona’s stance on the European Super League evolved.
He also challenged Real Madrid to provide evidence if the club believes that Negreira’s alleged influence on Spanish refereeing continues years after payments to the former official stopped.
Dispute Over Refereeing Reform
Tebas acknowledged that Spain’s refereeing system still requires reform but argued that institutional decisions cannot be based on the interests, mood or sporting results of a single club.
He stressed that reform should involve the wider football community rather than simply following the demands of Real Madrid. Tebas also argued that calls for transparency should involve the publication of all relevant information, rather than only material that supports one side of an argument.
The La Liga president further accused Real Madrid’s leadership of using pressure tactics, claiming that criticism of the club’s management is sometimes portrayed as an attack on Real Madrid and its supporters.
Tebas Raises Questions Over Match Scheduling
Tebas also challenged Real Madrid over its requests regarding match dates and kick-off times. If reports about the club’s scheduling requests are inaccurate, he urged Real Madrid to publicly deny them.
He also called for information on how many times Real Madrid has requested changes to match dates or kick-off times, how many requests were approved and how often scheduling changes were sought because of other events at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Real Madrid Calls for Tebas to Resign
Real Madrid previously called for Tebas to resign after he compared Real Madrid TV’s alleged communication strategy to Goebbels’ propaganda methods.
In his latest response, Tebas has gone further by accusing Real Madrid of attempting to damage Spanish domestic football after failing to push through the European Super League project.
These remain competing claims in an ongoing dispute between Real Madrid and La Liga, and the allegations should be understood in that context unless independently established by evidence or official findings.
