A woman has been detained by Kolkata Police following an allegation of an attempted attack near the Kalighat residence of former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

Trinamool Congress MP Dola Sen alleged that the 38-year-old woman approached Banerjee’s residence on Tuesday evening, verbally abused the former chief minister and attempted to attack her. Sen claimed that the woman was carrying a knife. A complaint was reportedly sent to Kalighat police station by email.

Kolkata Police confirmed that a woman had been detained in connection with the incident. Police Commissioner Ajay Nanda said the woman, who reportedly works as a civic volunteer, had been involved in an argument near the scene.

According to the police commissioner, preliminary information has been collected about the woman’s condition, while investigators are still trying to establish her motive. The allegations remain subject to investigation.

Sen also criticised the BJP-led state government over what she described as a security lapse. Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale shared a copy of her complaint on social media.

Police are continuing their investigation into the incident. Further details about the alleged attack and the woman’s intentions have yet to be established.
