World Cup titles keep coming for Spain; now they have won the U-20 Women's World Cup as well by defeating North Korea.

One World Cup follows another. From age-group levels to the senior stage, Spain is making history by winning title after title on FIFA's grandest platforms. Most recently, on Sunday night, Spain became the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup champions by defeating North Korea in a penalty shootout.

Consequently, Spain currently holds the titles for three major FIFA World Cups: the men's senior World Cup, the women's senior World Cup, and the U-20 women's World Cup. The men's team had previously won the senior World Cup in July 2026, and now the women's U-20 team has added this new trophy to the collection.

Goalkeeper Lopez emerges as the hero after a goalless 120 minutes

The final in Łódź between Spain and North Korea remained goalless through the regulation 90 minutes and proceeded to extra time. With neither side able to score during that period either, the match was decided by a penalty shootout.

It was here that goalkeeper Laia Lopez became Spain's savior, saving two crucial penalties from North Korea. Ultimately, Spain secured the title with a 4–3 victory in the shootout.

This marks Spain's second U-20 Women's World Cup title; they had previously won the trophy for the first time in Costa Rica in 2022.

A response to a defeat from two years ago

This final also carried echoes of a memory from two years prior. Spain had lost to North Korea in a penalty shootout during the final of the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. By defeating the same opponent in a shootout this time, the Spanish women have, to some extent, redeemed that past disappointment.

This generation of Spanish players has already achieved remarkable success in age-group football. In 2022, they won both the U-17 and U-20 World Cups, and the following year, in 2023, they claimed the senior Women's World Cup title as well.

Two World Cups in three months

Spain's achievement is even more impressive when considering the timeline; they lifted two FIFA World Cup trophies—across senior and age-group levels—within a span of just three months. Spain won the men's World Cup by defeating Argentina in the final in New Jersey last July. Now, they have also clinched the Women's U-20 World Cup by beating North Korea in Łódź, Poland.

Spain also dominated the individual awards at this U-20 World Cup: Rosalía Domínguez won the Golden Ball, Pau Comendador secured the Golden Boot, and final hero Laia López claimed the Golden Glove.
