Franco Baresi Passes Away at 66, Football Mourns an Eternal Legend

The football world is in mourning. Italian icon and AC Milan legend Franco Baresi has passed away at the age of 66. His death was confirmed on Friday, 31 July 2026, following a prolonged illness, prompting tributes from AC Milan, the Italian Football Federation, and fans across the globe.

Born on 8 May 1960 in Travagliato, Italy, Baresi spent his entire professional career with AC Milan. From 1977 to 1997, he made more than 700 appearances for the club, captained the team for 15 seasons, and won six Serie A titles and three European Cups/Champions League trophies.

He was equally influential for the Italian national team. Baresi was part of Italy’s 1982 World Cup-winning squad and later captained the Azzurri to the 1994 World Cup final. In that final against Brazil, he took Italy’s first penalty in the shootout but sent it over the crossbar as Italy eventually lost the title. Four years earlier, in the 1990 World Cup semi-final against Argentina, he had scored Italy’s opening penalty in the shootout, yet the hosts were still eliminated.

More than just a defender, Baresi will be remembered as one of the greatest sweepers in football history. His leadership, tactical intelligence, composure, and ability to organize an entire defense made him a unique figure in the game.

In an emotional tribute, AC Milan described him as “the heart and soul of the club.” The club had already retired the iconic No. 6 shirt in his honor.
