Carlos Queiroz has left his position as Ghana head coach after the team suffered consecutive defeats in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, ending his second spell in charge just one month after signing a new contract.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed on Thursday that the 73-year-old Portuguese coach had stepped down by mutual agreement following the team’s disappointing results.

Ghana’s latest setback came against Gambia at home. They appeared to be in control after taking a 2-0 lead, but the match quickly turned around as Gambia scored four times to complete a 4-2 comeback victory.

The defeat followed a 2-0 loss away to Ivory Coast in the previous qualifier, leaving Ghana with back-to-back defeats in the AFCON qualifying campaign.

Queiroz’s overall record during his latest spell was also underwhelming. Ghana played eight matches under the Portuguese coach, winning only once and losing four times, including their last four games in a row. They scored just five goals while conceding 10 during that period.

Queiroz was initially appointed in April as Ghana prepared for the World Cup in North America.

His team’s World Cup campaign was relatively positive. Ghana opened the tournament with a win over Panama and eventually progressed from the group stage as one of the best third-placed teams, with some help from other results. Their run ended in the Round of 32 with a defeat to Colombia.

Queiroz stepped down after the World Cup, but Ghana later reached a new agreement with the veteran coach. That reunion, however, lasted only around a month.

The Ghana Football Association must now begin the search for another head coach as the team continues its Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
