Post-match interviews often produce familiar answers, with players usually cautious about criticising their club’s leadership. Lisandro Martinez, however, took a different approach after Manchester United’s defeat to Atletico Madrid, openly questioning the club’s transfer strategy and efforts to build a stronger squad.
United suffered a 2-0 defeat against Atletico in the Champions League on Tuesday. The result added to their recent struggles, with the club reportedly going five consecutive matches without a win in all competitions and managing just one victory in their last seven games.
Speaking to Amazon Prime after the match, Martinez said he had expected United to strengthen their squad following last season’s progress. While rival clubs had added quality players, he felt United had not done enough in the transfer market.
“Really bad… very bad. Sometimes I have to control myself, but I have to say it: sometimes performances like this reflect the current state of our club,” Martinez said.
The Argentine defender also expressed his disappointment with technical director Jason Wilcox, saying he expected more from the club’s recruitment and squad-building efforts.
“I expect more investment at our club. One hundred per cent. I expect more from our technical director as well. I have to tell the truth today. As players, we have to do more, but building a strong squad is also important if we want to be prepared for nights like this,” Martinez said.
He warned that opponents already understand United’s style of play and tactical approach. Without meaningful changes, he believes the club could face even bigger problems next season. Martinez added that although United had laid a promising foundation last season, they needed greater ambition to maintain their progress.
United head coach Michael Carrick declined to comment directly on Martinez’s remarks. He acknowledged that players could feel frustrated after disappointing results but stressed that the priority was to remain united and work together to solve the team’s problems. Carrick also said he had no doubts about the players’ commitment or desire to win.
United had finished third in the Premier League last season after a strong late run, returning to the Champions League after a two-year absence. Their form has since deteriorated, raising questions about Carrick’s future.
The club’s transfer spending has also come under scrutiny. According to the figures provided, United spent around £150 million during the latest transfer window, significantly less than several of their major rivals. Martinez’s comments highlighted his belief that improving individual performances must go hand in hand with stronger recruitment and a more ambitious squad-building strategy.
