Portugal Beat Norway Again to Reach Nations League Quarter-Finals
Portugal continued their impressive run in the UEFA Nations League by defeating Norway 2-1 in Porto on Sunday. The defending champions secured their fourth consecutive victory and booked their place in the quarter-finals with two matches still remaining.
Jorge Jesus’ side dominated possession and attacking play throughout the match. Portugal enjoyed more than 55 percent possession and produced 20 shots, with seven on target. Norway managed nine attempts, only three of which were on target.
With four wins from four matches, Portugal have collected 12 points and secured their place in the last eight before the final two group-stage fixtures.
In Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence, Goncalo Ramos was handed another start and continued his excellent form. The striker has now scored in each of his last three appearances in the starting XI.
Portugal were forced to come from behind for the first time in this Nations League campaign. Norway took the lead in the 36th minute when defender Kristoffer Ajer controlled Martin Odegaard’s free-kick inside the box before firing a powerful shot into the far corner.
Norway’s lead lasted just two minutes. Joao Cancelo levelled the score with a spectacular strike after receiving Nuno Mendes’ pass just outside the penalty area.
Cancelo had earlier tested Norway goalkeeper Egil Selvik with a powerful long-range effort, while Bruno Fernandes also came close with another long-distance shot.
Portugal continued to dominate after the break and created several opportunities. Norway survived a major scare in the 73rd minute when Ruben Neves failed to convert from close range.
The decisive moment finally arrived in the 79th minute. Vitinha played a brilliant through ball into the box, allowing Joao Felix to get behind the defence before laying the ball across for Goncalo Ramos, who calmly finished from close range.
Portugal were reduced to 10 men late in the match when Francisco Conceicao received a second yellow card for his reaction to a referee’s decision. Despite having a numerical advantage, Norway were unable to mount a serious comeback.
The victory leaves Portugal top of the group with a perfect 12 points from four matches. Denmark moved into second place with six points after beating Wales 1-0, while Norway and Wales remain on three points each.
