Ramos rose from Ronaldo's shadow; now his family is also under attack.
The soft light of sunset. Gonçalo Ramos and his wife, Margarida Domingues, smiling at the camera with their young child in their arms. The photo was meant to capture a purely private family moment. However, after being posted on Instagram, it became the center of a different kind of conversation.
The reason? The comments section of Margarida’s post was flooded with messages from Cristiano Ronaldo’s supporters. Some extolled Ronaldo’s greatness, others shared images of his goal celebrations, and some even directly attacked Ramos. According to the Portuguese media outlet *A Bola*, the post garnered over three thousand comments in just two days.
Yet, the post was simply about a personal moment shared by Ramos, his wife, and their child; it had no direct connection to Ronaldo whatsoever.
Ronaldo at the center of a storm; Ramos caught in the middle
It is not difficult to understand the reason behind this "Ronaldo storm."
Intense speculation has surrounded Ronaldo following recent events involving the Portuguese national team. After spending the entire match against Norway on the bench, the 41-year-old Ronaldo left the national team camp immediately after coach Jorge Jesus announced that he would not start the game against Denmark. He later stated that he would reveal the reasons behind his decision at the "right time."
It was then that the opportunity arose for Ramos to step in for Ronaldo.
Starting in Ronaldo's absence against Norway, Ramos scored the winning goal. He followed this up with a goal and an assist in the 4–2 victory over Denmark. Most recently, he scored the winner in the 2–1 victory against Norway. In short, Ramos has scored in three consecutive matches since Ronaldo left the squad.
What better way could there be to seize such an opportunity!
The story of comparisons began in 2022
For Ramos, however, standing in Ronaldo's shadow is nothing new. In the Round of 16 match against Switzerland at the 2022 World Cup, Fernando Santos benched Ronaldo and fielded Ramos in the starting XI. Ramos created a sensation by scoring a hat-trick in that very match at the age of just 21.
That was when the question arose: "Who is Ronaldo's successor?"
But the problem is, Ramos can never be Ronaldo—nor is he meant to be. One is among the greatest Portuguese footballers of all time; the other is a 25-year-old forward trying to carve out a place for himself in the national team.
Yet, whenever Ronaldo is on the bench and Ramos is on the pitch, comparisons seem inevitable.
One opponent on the field, another off it
On the pitch, Ramos faces defenders and goalkeepers. But off the pitch, he seems to be battling a far greater adversary: Ronaldo's towering shadow.
Comments from Ronaldo's supporters on a family post by Ramos's wife, Margarida, have highlighted this reality. Ramos did not oust Ronaldo from the national team, nor did he play any role in Ronaldo's decision to leave the squad. Yet, simply because he is playing in Ronaldo's position, he has become a target of resentment.
Even private photos of Ramos's wife and child have not been spared from this conflict.
This time, however, Ramos is responding
But Ramos is answering the social media comments in a different way—on the pitch.
He has scored three goals in the three matches played in Ronaldo's absence. This includes a goal in each of the two matches against Norway, and a goal plus an assist against Denmark. This marks the first time in his career that he has scored in three consecutive matches for the national team.
After the 4–2 victory over Denmark, Ramos said, "I have proven myself in my own right."
That is perhaps his most powerful response.
Because Ramos's battle is not actually against Ronaldo; his battle is to carve out his own place. He might find himself back on the bench once Ronaldo returns, and the comparisons will inevitably resume. But for now, he is making the most of the opportunity before him—in his own language: by scoring goals.
And no matter how vast Ronaldo’s shadow may be, Ramos is perhaps now gradually beginning to cast a shadow of his own.
