Cricket fans surely remember Virender Sehwag’s explosive batting. A hallmark of the former Indian opener’s style was his aggressive approach, often raining down fours and sixes against the bowlers. Now, his son, Aryavir Sehwag, has offered a glimpse of that same aggressive flair. In India’s domestic Under-19 circuit, the 18-year-old opener played a brilliant innings of 173 runs off 143 balls.

Playing in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, Delhi captain Aryavir struck 19 fours and 8 sixes. Powered by his remarkable performance, Delhi posted a total of 289 for 6 in their allotted 50 overs against Chandigarh.

Aryavir: Aggressive from the start

The Elite phase of the Vinoo Mankad Trophy began on October 8 in Visakhapatnam, with Aryavir leading the Delhi side. He made his debut for the India Under-19 team against Australia in Rajkot last September, and he is now shouldering the responsibility of captaincy in domestic cricket.

However, the tournament’s previous match had not gone well for Aryavir. Against Karnataka, Delhi conceded 418 runs and were subsequently bowled out for just 220. Aryavir contributed 32 runs in that match, but despite a promising start, he was unable to convert it into a substantial innings. He more than made up for that disappointment against Chandigarh with a magnificent century.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Aryavir and Arnab Bugga provided Delhi with a strong start, putting together 98 runs for the opening wicket. Arnab was dismissed for 47 by Rupesh Yadav, and Delhi lost their second wicket at 107.

Aryavir held one end steady while continuing to accumulate runs. He forged a 48-run partnership for the third wicket with wicketkeeper-batter Abhiraj Singh, who scored 18 runs. At one stage, Delhi’s score stood at 179 for 4. 124 Runs from Fours and Sixes

From that point, Aryavir—partnered with Shantanu Yadav—added another 89 runs for the fifth wicket, with Shantanu contributing 27. Meanwhile, Sehwag’s son remained steady at the other end, continuing to build his score.

Before being dismissed by Shreshth Duggal in the 46th over, Aryavir scored 173 runs off 143 balls. His innings included 19 fours and 8 sixes—meaning 124 of his runs came from boundaries alone. Among the Chandigarh bowlers, Rupesh Yadav claimed two wickets, while Parth Gupta, in particular, had to bear the brunt of Aryavir’s aggressive onslaught.

His father, Virender Sehwag, was renowned in international cricket for his fearless and aggressive batting style; even in Test cricket, he would maintain an ODI-like approach, keeping bowlers under constant pressure. This innings by Aryavir reflects that very same batting philosophy.

Consistency in the Youth Team

This is not the first time Aryavir has showcased his talent. Last September, during a three-match youth ODI series against Australia, he scored 109 runs for India. India won the rain-affected first match by 7 runs.

In the second match of the series, Aryavir was India’s top scorer with 47 runs; he might well have reached a half-century had he not been run out. He followed this with 34 runs in the final match. By scoring runs in all three games, the young opener demonstrated remarkable consistency.

Aryavir also has experience playing in the Delhi Premier League, where he represented the West Delhi Lions. Now, with this 173-run innings in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, Sehwag’s son has once again proven his capabilities.
